South Dakota Float Project

What is it?

A state float as a shoe box decorated like a float in a parade that will contain information and facts about South Dakota.

Materials Needed

  • 1 empty shoe box - Shoe box must be covered with construction paper, butcher paper, fabric or painted.
  • Non-living materials to decorate your float
    • Construction paper, popsicle sticks, cardboard, toy figures, clay, flowers, ribbon, stickers, etc.
    • Don’t be afraid to use recycle or repurposed materials. For example, an empty, clean Pringles can might be a great silo on a farm.
  • These items may be 2-dimensional(drawn, photographed or printed from a computer) or 3-dimensional objects hand made by the students (examples: tissue paper flowers) or they may be manufactured (example; plastic figurine).

Things you must display on the top and/or sides of your float:

  • Display an outline map and label the capital with a star.
  • Name and nickname of South Dakota
  • State bird, tree, flower, flag
